MALAYSIAN POLICE INVESTIGATE INFLUENCER OVER ROYAL-INSPIRED AQIQAH CEREMONY

PETALING JAYA – The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has launched an investigation into a viral video depicting an influencer’s family staging an aqiqah ceremony in attire resembling royal traditions. The footage, widely shared online, shows the family dressed entirely in yellow, complete with tengkolok, closely imitating ceremonial outfits associated with Malay royalty.

According to Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Director, Datuk M. Kumar, the case is being handled by the Classified Crimes Investigation Unit (USJT), Division D5. Authorities confirmed that the act is being probed under several legal provisions, including Section 3(1) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

These laws carry heavy penalties. Misuse of royal symbols may result in fines of up to RM1,000, while other offences under the Penal Code and Communications Act can bring penalties of up to RM500,000 and imprisonment of up to three years.

The incident has drawn significant criticism from social media users, many of whom argue that replicating royal attire in such a manner is disrespectful to royal traditions and may be unlawful.

Police have urged the public to refrain from actions that could be seen as misusing royal symbols, stressing the importance of respecting cultural and constitutional institutions. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities gather evidence and statements from those involved.

The controversy highlights growing scrutiny on influencers and public figures, particularly when their actions touch on sensitive cultural and legal boundaries in Malaysia.
