FIVE MARA SKILLS INSTITUTE STUDENTS DIE IN FATAL TUARAN ROAD COLLISION

A devastating road accident in Tuaran has claimed the lives of five students from the MARA Skills Institute (IKM) Kota Kinabalu. The fatal crash occurred around 2 pm at the junction near the RELA Training Centre along Jalan Sulaman.

The students were travelling in a Toyota Wish heading from Sepanggar towards Kota Belud when their car reportedly skidded and collided with an oncoming lorry transporting gravel. The force of the impact left all five trapped inside the vehicle. Fire and Rescue Department personnel rushed to the scene and used special equipment to extricate the victims, but they were pronounced dead by Health Ministry officers at the site.

The deceased were identified as Harianto Anuar, 20; Neil Stanly Pletinie, 20; Mohammad Ikhwan Kurniawan, 20; and Mohamad Zuhaikal Mohd Zaidy, 20. Authorities are still working to confirm the identity of the fifth victim. The lorry driver was unharmed.

Tuaran District Police Chief, Superintendent Noraidin Ag Maidin, confirmed the incident. “All bodies have been sent to the Forensic Unit of Tuaran Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Investigations are ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

The tragedy has shocked the local community and sparked concern about road safety in the area. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially on accident-prone routes such as Jalan Sulaman.
